Programming Description

The Additional Qualification (AQ) course, French as a Second Language, Part I, one of the triad of courses on FSL in Ontario, is built upon several foundational principles. These foundations are designed to equip educators with skills and knowledge integral to enhancing learning experiences, improving outcomes, and fostering an inclusive environment in a diverse and dynamic educational landscape. One such foundation is the understanding and application of adult learning theories that foster critical reflection, dialogue, and inquiry. These theories guide the course's structure, allowing educators to delve deeper into teaching, learning, and assessment practices, especially in FSL. Another cornerstone is the Anti-Oppression Foundation. Recognizing that systemic power and privilege have led to various forms of oppression and inequalities, this foundation imbues the ethical and professional responsibility in educators to identify and challenge these barriers. The aim is to support each student's learning, well-being, and inclusion, acknowledging the impact of biases and assumptions on both student and educator learning experiences.

Learner Outcomes

Articulate and uphold the ethical standards and professional expectations essential for teaching French as a Second Language in Ontario.*Navigate and utilize Learning Management Systems effectively to enhance the FSL teaching and learning experience*Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in the FSL classroom, guided by the Ontario Human Rights Code and AODA.*Appreciate the historical significance and evolution of languages in Canada, with a particular emphasis on the French language's role. *Implement Culturally Responsive and Relevant Pedagogy (CRRP) in their classrooms, ensuring that students of diverse backgrounds feel represented and included. *Analyze and apply the various regulations, benefits, and structures of FSL programs at the district level in Ontario.*Integrate modern technology, including online learning modalities, AI tools, and assistive technologies, to enhance FSL instruction.*Design lessons and strategies that account for the diverse needs of students, with particular attention to special education considerations and intersectionality.*Effectively assess and evaluate students, incorporating tools like metacognition and creating report cards tailored to the FSL context.*Foster a positive and culturally aware classroom environment, integrating elements such as music, play-based learning, and cooperative strategies.

Prerequisites

1. OCT MEMBERSHIP with qualifications in Primary, Junior, Intermediate or Senior plus one of the following. 
  1. Complete A DELF assessment (done with a provider of your choosing) and the results showing B2 or higher.
    OR
  2. A French Bilingual/Immersion/Extended Certificate and a copy of your transcript from an anglophone secondary school or a copy of your transcript if you have graduated from a francophone secondary school.
    OR
  3. The completion of a degree in the French language

*Tech Certified Teachers who do not hold an undergraduate degree are not eligible to take this course.
