Course Description

Critical exploration recognizing and honouring the rich cultural history of First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples relating to the Canadian educational context with a focus on current practices and pedagogies as they connect to traditional teachings.

Learner Outcomes

Gain a comprehensive understanding of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit cultures, traditions, and ways of learning.*Develop instructional strategies that create culturally responsive learning environments for Indigenous students and allies.*Examine curriculum and assessment practices through an anti-oppressive lens to promote inclusive learning and decolonize education.*Explore the history of Indigenous education, critical literacy, and methods for analyzing bias in media.*Use the Seven Grandfather and Medicine Wheel teachings to develop skills in integrating Indigenous knowledge into curriculum and programming, supporting Truth and Reconciliation Commission's calls to action.*Reflect on personal learning journeys and develop a portfolio and story assignment to deepen understanding of Indigenous cultures and ways of knowing.

Prerequisites

OCT MEMBERSHIP with qualifications in Primary, Junior, Intermediate or Senior./ *Tech Certified Teachers who do not hold an undergraduate degree are not eligible to take this course.
