Course Description
Teaching English Language Learners, Part I, is designed to enhance candidates’ professional practice and knowledge in teaching English to diverse learners. Key areas of focus include curriculum knowledge, pedagogical strategies, and creating a conducive learning environment. The course underscores the importance of an anti-oppression foundation, addressing biases and barriers that may affect learners, and incorporates ethical standards for teaching practice. It incorporates First Nations, Métis, and Inuit histories, perspectives, and knowledge systems. The course follows current Ontario curriculum, ministry policies, and relevant legislation, emphasizing accessibility and special education needs. It provides instruction on theories of learning and teaching, with an emphasis on learner-centred pedagogy, and supports for learners, including mental health and wellness. Methods for teaching, assessing, and evaluating students are covered, along with pathway and transition planning. The course promotes safe, equitable, and inclusive learning environments and encourages the integration of e-learning principles. Culturally responsive and relevant pedagogical practices are encouraged, and students learn to apply principles of social justice and democratic citizenship, as well as environmental sustainability in teaching. The course underscores shared responsibility for learning, emphasizing collaboration with families, caregivers, and the community. Lastly, the course aims to build professional learning communities, fostering collaboration and leadership within the teaching community.Learner Outcomes
