EDUC 9N695 - Teaching Students with Communication Needs (Autism Spectrum Disorders)
Programming Description
Understanding and supporting learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is critical to creating an inclusive and effective learning environment. This course provides a comprehensive overview of ASD, covering symptoms, diagnosis, myths, effective instructional practices, behavior management strategies and the importance of neurodiversity. You will explore Ontario's educational policies, develop practical resources and learn about the intersectionality of ASD with gender, culture and other identities.
In this course, you will examine with resources and learner profiles, create educational resources and engage in professional discourse. Through reflections and a culminating project, you will apply evidence-based strategies to scenario-based activities. These activities are designed to enhance your understanding and ability to effectively support learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Learner Outcomes
In this course, you will
- create practical, evidence-based educator resources to support learners with ASD
- critically evaluate various aspects of ASD, including diagnostic criteria, early signs, long-term outcomes, historical contributions, common misconceptions and evidence-based interventions
- reflect on your understanding and experiences related to ASD to better support learners and foster a more inclusive and effective learning environment
- examine and interpret the effectiveness of different instructional and behavioural strategies and support programs to enhance the learning and development
- critically analyze cultural perspectives and their impact on educational and community-level support
- evaluate the implications of different disability models, symbols and intersectional identities to develop effective, inclusive support strategies
Notes
TIME COMMITMENT: As required by the Ontario College of Teachers all additional qualification courses are 125 hours. This time allotment includes ongoing and active participation in the online discussion area and the completion of readings, assignments and tasks.
OSAP Eligibility: This course qualifies for OSAP funding as a micro-credential.
