Programming Description
Co-operative Education, Part 1, prepares educators to design and deliver co-operative education programs for high school students. This course explores different types of experiential learning, including traditional co-op placements, Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP), Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM), and Dual Credit options. You’ll learn how these programs connect to the Ontario Ministry of Education’s co-operative education curriculum.
You will explore the roles and responsibilities of co-op teachers, how to plan pre-placement activities, monitor student progress, and support students during their placements. The course will help you build strong partnerships with employers and community groups to ensure safe and meaningful work experiences.
Learner Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will
• Design co-operative education programs that align with Ministry of Education policies and support diverse student needs, interests, and future pathways.
• Develop strategies that help students build transferable skills, workplace readiness, and self-advocacy.
• Implement effective, inclusive, and culturally responsive teaching practices and partnerships with employers and community organizations.
• Create and apply assessment tools that measure student learning, workplace performance, and overall program success.
• Evaluate the legal and ethical responsibilities of educators and placement partners to ensure safe, respectful, and compliant learning environments.
• Reflect on your professional growth and leadership to improve co-operative education practices.
Notes
TIME COMMITMENT: As required by the Ontario College of Teachers all additional qualification courses are 125 hours. This time allotment includes ongoing and active participation in the online discussion area and the completion of readings, assignments and tasks.
OSAP Eligibility: This course qualifies for OSAP funding as a micro-credential.
Prerequisites
OCT MEMBERSHIP with qualifications in Primary, Junior, Intermediate or Senior.
